  • Universal Century Part 2 - Sides and Colonies Summary

    philee1031:

There are total of eight Sides in the Gundam Universe.  Each Side has its own number behind it.  Each Side is a conglomerate of multiple space colonies.  All Sides are located in between the Earth and the Moon and orbit around Lagrange point, which 19th century French Mathematician, Lagrange, defined as the safest spot in space.  Space colonies have cylindrical shapes with all but one, Side 3, have open-type, which an exterior is covered with glasses.

Side 1, Zarn, has the first space colony named, Shanfri-La.  The 13th colony of Zarn was decimated by the Zeon’s nuclear attack on UC0079.    Londenion, a home of London-Bell, the Earth Federation special forces, is where Zeon and the Earth Federation had negotiation during their conflicts.

Side 2, Hatte, is the first Sides to be attacked by the Zeon during the One Year War, the war that took place before Mobile Suit Gundam.

Side 3, Munzo, is the farthest away from the Earth and is a home of the Zeon. It is the only Side to remove the glass exterior.   Zum City is the famous colony within Side 3, because this is the original home of the Zeon and was named after the famous revolutionist, Zeon Zum Deikun  (Char’s father).

Side 5, Loum, has a history of changing its name and by UC0110, it was renamed as the Frontier Side. Industrial 7 is where the story of Gundam Unicorn starts off.  This is the place where RX-0 Unicorn Gundam is created along with other mobile suits by Anaheim Electronics.

Side 7, Noa, is famous for the Earth Federation to successfully fend off an attack by Zeon mobile suits with its own mobile suits.  Green Noah is known to be the first place in the UC history to have mobile suits combat. To simply put, this was where Amuro accidentally went aboard Gundam and fought with Zeon’s Zakus.  Gryps, another colony, holds a similar importance as Green Noah but for a different character, Kamille Bidan.  Gryps is the place where Z Gundam Movie  starts.

Cosplayer at the 1976 WorldCon. I recognize the outfit from a DAW cover of Star.

Arguably the first space opera, Star is by the awesomely named Charlemagne Defontenay, who in addition to being a scifi writer, was a doctor who is considered by many to be one of the creators of the field of plastic surgery.
